This is the second automatic feeder for our dog 75 pound mutt that we’ve tried; the first was the “PetSafe Healthy Pet Simply Feed” which worked — ok — for a little under 18 months. We began to have an issue with the mechanism jamming and not dispensing food on an inconsistent basis. It became a big enough issue where we never knew for sure if our dog got enough food if we weren’t there to watch it dispense.

She would never let on either way, which didn’t help. This unit is priced much more reasonably, is easier and more user friendly to set up and control, and the mechanism seems to me to be a better design.

There were a couple of unfortunate instances where our old dispenser ran out of food, causing a temporary missed meal. As of this morning, pricing out the other unit with an adapter comes in at just under dollars.

There is still a battery back-up for this dispenser, so if you lose power your pet will still get fed. Granted, the old unit allowed other features like slow feeding mode, additional feeding times, and early, manual dispensing of food which then automatically skips the next scheduled feeding. This dispenser is more basic, with 4 available feeding times in a day breakfast, lunch, dinner, and “4th meal” which worked just find for us.

Our dog’s feeding needs are pretty basic. If I had a complaint, it would be with the initial “fine tuning” needed to get the pet’s portion correct. It’s based on grams, and each rotation of the hopper delivers 10 grams. First meal came out a little on the large size dog did not complain so we backed it off a bit and got it pretty close on our second try. If I was to do it over again, I’d keep hitting the manual dispense button each time cycles one hopper of food until we filled up the appropriate feeding cup.

As long as you keep track of how many it takes to do that 6 for us you should be pretty much set. All in all, for under 90 dollars my wife and I feel this is a better dispenser than our previous purchase. It’s not pretty, but I’ve added a wad of aluminum foil around the wire over the the hole and that seems to be working to keep the moisture out. Plus, the wad of foil glides up the wire easily when I need to refill. Works great so far, finches love it and the design is such that the morning doves are unable to get to the perch and camp out. I used to use a bowl type feeder, but the morning doves would just live in that thing, now they do the cleanup on the bottom and the finches are able to enjoy the feeder.

On ground broken within 30 minutes As another reviewer has said the key parts of this feeder are actually plastic and brittle. So it gets knocked or falls to ground not sure which as did not see it and the plastic bits snap, Whole thing does not then hold together or provide the gaps for the seed to flow out. However, rain can get in down the steel cable that it hangs from, and through the collar and into the seed, which causes it to clump inside the feeder. A partly succesfull fix has been to press a lump of blu-tack onto the lid where the steel cable passes through, but maybe a silicone grommet inside may be better.

One complaint that I have is the rubber around the lip of the bowl, this is intended to make the bowls quiet in the metal stand which is does a great job at. However, water gets under the rubber ring when you wash it or when the dog drinks out of it and it gets slimy and nasty.

It is also very hard to put back on the bowl by yourself, if you take it off to clean it. I would suggest to put rubber circles on the stand it self so the bowls touch that instead of the metal and it will be quieter that way.

Other than that, this is a great product that I would recommend and buy again. When the box arrived, one of the wire stands that supports the two plastic bowls had a bent leg, but it was easily bent back into place. The white plastic bowls do not absorb heat from sitting outside in sunlight and they are easy to clean. A rubber ring, that wraps around the top lip of the bowl slips off easily for cleaning.

When you are a 17 year old dog, you need all the help you can get, and these bowls are good for senior doggies. Our Goldendoodle went right over and seems to really appreciate not having to eat or drink from a bowl on the floor.
